More wonderful Wood!

http://japanesecarpentry.com/project6.htm
I dont have the craftaliens name for this work, but I included the source. How schnizzle is this?It is a bathroom out of my dreams by Takumi Company of Seattle. Can we talk a bit about how to dye wood with the natural/traditional plant dyes? - The other source below, "Craft house Mana" aka. nifty- is a homey site but has some interesting pix of lathe made items as well as dye recipies and techniques. Sorry I cant post an active link-I am computer challenged. But then Im only a Squerlhttp://homepage3.nifty.com/manasan/english/english.htm

Modern Susan Dining Table

"Modern Susan" dining table on display at the Abernathy Arts Center in Sandy Springs, GA

Photo: Ken Schneiderman

A few weeks ago a friend of mine from Atlanta forwarded a photo of an interesting table he saw at an art show. I thought it was very cool and it reminded me of something that would come out of our "Furniture Lab" project we have going here at Fine Woodworking. Its made out of Baltic Birch plywood, glass, casted aluminum and neoprene. I contacted the builder, Seth Keaveny, and here is what he had to say about his inspiration for the piece:

"In this particular case I wanted to use a "found" or as you stated "non-

traditional" item(s) in the design while adding an element of mystery. The

goal was to design a dining table that the end user could interact with.

In the end, watching both adults and children alike spin the glass around

and around with gigantic smiles on their face validated that my goal was

indeed achieved.

A lot of people were amazed that a central Z axis point was

not included in the design. Through a little experimentation and a little

love from the world of physics, I was able to fabricate a functional dining table

without comprimising the integrity of the initial concept and design.

I am very proud of this piece and plan on designing a complete ensemble.

This includes a coffee table and end tables/night stands."

Measuring things without a tape measure

Say, whats a tape measure done for you lately? After many years of woodworking, I discovered that I was using tape measures less and less. When I can, I dont use one at all, opting for memory sticks or cutting notches in a board at whatever length is needed. In other words, using unitless measurements based on the actual lengths needed. Its actually far more accurate than a tape measure.

But there I times when I just need to calculate a few rough estimates. There are countless ways of measing stuff without a ruler. Let us know if you have some more ideas! Here are a few that I use:

Top Woodworking Projects for You

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Lucas_K_Everett]Lucas K Everett
Its coming up to Christmas again, and that means holidays for many of us. If you are like me and love to get away for a vacation, its probably your favourite time of the year. I also like to use the opportunity to finish the current projects I have under construction and/or start new ones. Maybe you can use some of your free time to get stuck into some woodworking. If you need some ideas or having trouble getting motivated I have put together a list of top woodworking projects for you.
Do you know someone expecting a new member of the family to come along soon? If you do, you should think about making them a cradle or cot. This is a great furniture plan and can be handed around the family as new babies come along through the years. It gives great satisfaction making furniture for the ones we love. I have just recently built a bed with drawers for our 17 month old so we could use the cot for the new baby.
You could also make a nice armchair or rocking chair for when mummy has to get up through the night to feed the new baby. A chair is a great idea and with the extra skill required for this woodworking project you better get started. With the comfort of a handmade piece of furniture youll be sure to earn some serious brownie points with the new mother. Theres nothing like a due date to get a project under way.
I bet youve always wanted to build a kitchen table, well now is your chance. Everybody needs somewhere to sit down and eat their dinner. The festive season is a great time to have friends and family over for a meal and your guests will be impressed by a piece of furniture that you built with your own two hands. A very practical woodwork design and your wife will be happy for you to spend some time in your work shed. An alternative to the kitchen table could be a coffee table or have a go at making dining chairs.
If you want to try your hand at some carpentry and the weather suits, you could build a shed for your garden tools and sporting equipment. You will get a real sense of achievement from building a shed, even if it is a small garden shed. I enjoy getting out in the sun and doing some hard work. Once you have built this you will have the confidence to take on something bigger next time, maybe a great big woodwork shed for yourself.
Here are the Top Woodworking Projects for You with some alternatives:
 Build a Cradle
 Build a Cot
 Build an Armchair
 Build a Rocking Chair
 Build a Deck Chair
 Build a Kitchen Table
 Build a Coffee Table
 Build some Dining Chairs
 Build a Hall stand
 Build a Garden Shed
 Build a Pergola
 Build a Carport
Thats just a few to help inspire you. So next time youre sitting on the couch thinking to yourself that you should be doing something, grab a plan for one of these top woodworking projects and get out and enjoy your woodworking.

Bent Lamination continued

So, here are a couple of pictures of work by students in my Woodworking For Sculpture class from ten years ago. The first piece is a life-sized wooden "corset" made of laminated plywood. We had to make a different form for each different contour you see here-- the shoulders, chest, waist, and hips. The other piece is an example of just thin strips of wood stapled together to form an organic abstract sculpture-- no glue, no real "lamination". This piece was also inspired by the Martin Puryear woven cedar piece I showed in class.

Rhonda Lewis, circa 1998

A trick to do bent laminations with just drywall screws instead of clamps. Looks a bit time-consuming compared to clamping. Please open and print out the PDFs I emailed to the class about bent lamination.

Still organizing

I decided against throwing out my scrap wood and am giving it away on Craigslist. I saw an episode of Hoarders the other day and it really inspired me to stop saving stuff I probably will never use.

Ive been working on getting a video together for the guitar pick holder I made last weekend. Look for it on Friday. Its really a great little project and one that allows you to use those, well, scraps youve been saving. Wait, what?? Preview of it at the end of this video:

Out of commission for a while

Well, with the changing of Summer into Fall, and the end of boating season, I usually resume my woodworking projects. I was getting geared up to FINALLY build some cabinets/storage under my workbench. I have the idea in my head and was thinking I would start on it this weekend. Well, Im going to have to put that on the back burner for a few weeks at least; I was playing some basketball on Tuesday night and blew out my knee. The initial diagnosis is a torn acl and cartilage; MRI will tell the full extent of the damage, but it is looking like acl replacement surgery in the next couple of weeks. Im a pretty active, and independent, person so being laid up in a full leg brace and crutches is killing me!

On another woodworking note, I was able to do some "new to me" woodworking recently; pen turning. This is one of the coolest things ever...I love it! I got a flier in the mail from Penn State Industries about their starter kit and figured "why not give it a try". So I ordered this kit: http://www.pennstateind.com/store/PK073SPECX.html
It arrived a few days later and is chock full of great stuff. I have only turned two pens, but I think they came out great. I will try and get some pictures up in the next couple of days. My wife took one of the, which is actually my favorite one, so when she gets back Im going to snap a couple pictures and get them up. I will probably write a bit of a review about the kit as well so stay tuned for that.

So, even with the busted up knee, Im hoping that I can still turn some pens and pencils, maybe get started on some Christmas presents this way. Happy woodworking and STAY SAFE!!

WoodTreks Great Woodworking Site!

About a month ago I stumbled across a great woodworking website I had never seen before, nor ever heard of; that site is WoodTreks. WoodTreks is a video blog by woodworker and filmmaker Keith Cruickshank. When I first saw the site I thought "man, this is kind of cool!"...then after about 4 straight hours spent on the site I thought "man! This IS cool!". The site is all video podcasts and has several categories from materials, techniques, tools as well as artisan profiles; I really like the artisan profiles, and the materials videos are pretty incredible you get to walk through a lumber mill and see how they process logs.

When you watch one of the videos, one of the first things you think is "is this from a TV show?". Keiths film making background is very apparent in the great quality videos and sound. Whats even more neat, to me, is you dont even know hes there...its like you are standing there with the artisan and they are talking to you.

About the site itself. One of the first things you notice about the site is how clean it is; no unnecessary graphics, no ads, no pop-ups, just great content. Next, when you click on the videos, again, no ads, no endorsement, nothing...except if you consider "watch more of my free videos" an ad or endorsement. Oh, did I mention free? Yep, free! No subscription, no registration, just click on the video and go! You can, as I have, subscribe to his site, via an RSS feed or through email, if you like as well so you dont miss a single episode. While you are there, dont forget to go to the Links section and check out some of the other blogs and sites that Keith has there; there are a ton of great sites there.

WoodTreks, its full of great information, its clean and concise, and best of all...its FREE!

Coffee Table Project Topping it off

Ok, so I resawed the piece for the top, planed it down and glued it together. Planing this thing down was a real treat! This particular piece is going to be great as a top, but it has a lot of switch back grain pattern which is a nightmare to work with. I had to take very, very light passes and try to scew the board at an angle as it went through the planer to avoid major tearout. So far it has come out good.

Next, I wanted to do something with the corners of the table, I didnt want it to be just square or just round the corners so I went with what is called a clam shell corner. it just so happens that my dining room table is like this so I took a quarter inch piece of plywood and traced it out to make a template. I modified it just a little, traced it onto my table top and cut it out on the band saw and used my spindle sander to sand to the line. Here is a view of it roughed out.
From Coffee Table

You can see the pattern, especially in the upper right. You can also make out the book match effect a little with the dark grain pattern in the middle of the board. So, normally I would just round over the top of the edges and be done with it, but I really wanted to test my skills on this project so I decided to do a double bead. I had seen this somewhere else and really liked it. Because of the grain on the top, I didnt want to risk using a router and have it take a chunk out of the edges. So what I did was approach it in two steps. First, I use a rabbet bit in the router and routed a 1/8" groove, centered, around the edge of the board. Next, I took a piece of metal and made a scratch stock. This allows me to control the cut by adjusting the angle and pressure to make sure Im not doing too much at one time. From there, it was just pure putting my back into it and taking my time. Heres a shot of the scratch stock and the edge Im putting on the top.
From Coffee Table

Here you can really see the groove that I cut and the double bead Im talking about; this is really turning out nice in my opinion and just adds another nice little touch. It was a lot easier to do than I though. Now I need to do some finish sanding and start thinking of how I want to finish it. Ideas/suggestions welcome on the finish!

Refinishing an Antique Chair

About a month ago my in-laws came to visit for the day and when they arrived my father-in-law hauled an old antique chair out of the trunk of their car.  I was instantly smitten.  Im not sure if he had intended to or if he just felt bad since I kept sighing over it, but he gave the chair to me.

The chair was sadly in need of some TLC but I didnt have the time then so the chair went up to our dark cave (otherwise known as the upstairs-currently-being-renovated).  I finally had some time this week to work on it.  Ive never refinished an antique piece without painting it so Im not sure if Ive done it correctly, but I love the way it turned out.

BEFORE:

As usual, I didnt take a very good "before" picture, but you can see the chair was dirty, scratched and worn.  The back of the chair was caned, but sadly it had been punctured in a couple places.

I dragged the chair outside for a good cleaning and some sanding and oh boy, was I nervous.  But it had worn so much in some places it was splintering.

Once I finished sanding, I put one coat of a pecan colored stain on.  We liked the contrast of the two tones so I chose to go light on the stain.  I finished by rubbing on some Annie Sloan wax.

I wasnt sure what to do about the caning so I consulted my favorite furniture expert, Miss Mustard Seed.  I read her post about refinishing a cane-backed chair with some drop cloth and a piece of trim.  And fortunately I just happened to have some drop cloth on hand.  I stapled it on and then glued on some trim I found at the fabric store.

Isnt she pretty?  The best part is that the chair is completely functional and surprisingly very comfortable.  The seat height and back are adjustable.

On the back of the chair I simply glued a piece of drop cloth over the cane.  (I did iron and fold the drop cloth beforehand so that the edges looked finished.)

While I was cleaning the chair, I noticed a couple metal plates.  One had a serial number and the other identified the name of the chair company.  Turns out the chair was made by the B.L. Marble Chair Company.  I did a little google searching and enjoyed reading a little about the history of this chair company.  I also read in one place that the bottom of the chair would have productions details either written in chalk or on a piece of paper.  I found the piece of paper but unfortunately it disintegrated the second I touched it.  I also found an engraved marking that identified the wood as birch.

Im not sure how old this chair is, but I think its worn character fits just perfectly in our home and now Im on the lookout for another chair to complement it.  By the way, my father-in-law only paid $15 for this chair... Im not sure of the value of this chair, but Im pretty sure that was a steal!

Beautiful Vintage Coffee Grinder and More

Happy Friday!  I dont know about you but Im so ready for the weekend.
Today I wanted to blog about a few cool pieces my hubby
picked up at an auction last weekend.
The first is this amazing 100 year old Hobart industrial coffee grinder.

This thing weighs around 90 pounds!  And the best thing is that it works perfectly.
I had asked my hubby to keep an eye out for a cool vintage coffee grinder for our shop because we are wanting to have coffee available to our customers and I thought it would be really fun to freshly grind the beans in a vintage mill.
Then he came home with this beauty and Im not sure Im going to be able to give it up.  :)

I love the lines.....

Another piece he brought home is this steamer trunk.

Weve always wanted one and he loved this one.  It needs a few minor repairs
but I cant wait to find a special place for it.

And he also found these vintage wool Navy blankets.  They are so soft, believe it or not.  Im not usually a fan of wool but I love these.

I also wanted to share with you a new member of our family.

Im the first to admit, Im not a cat person, never have been.  But a couple of weeks ago, when I went to open the blinds in the kitchen one morning,
this was what I saw on the table outside.

He seemed to be a stray and without a family and had made himself quite at home in my little toolbox.  He was so sweet and we all immediately fell in love with him.  I dont know much about cats but he is so lovable and really loves attention.
He crawls up in our laps whenever we sit down.

And whenever Im outside working on a project, I look down
and this is what I see every time....

Those sweet green eyes looking up at me.
He lays at my feet no matter what Im doing.
He has stolen our hearts, already.
And he loves to play for the camera.

Silly cat....  :)
Weve never had pets (except an outdoor rabbit)
because our kids always had allergies when they were younger.
Now that theyve grown out of them, weve decided to adopt this little guy
and they are so happy.
How can you not fall in love with that face?

Have a great weekend!

Diana
